"The Emergency Communications / Ham / CB Radio class will concentrate on the importance of having some sort of emergency communications available during crises of any sort.  Most people think they will just be able to use their cell phones if their home phones don't work, but in every disaster/storm/crisis since the inventions of telegraph and telephone, ALL normal communications systems fail in the first several days after an "event", due to:
(1) Overload - when an earthquake, tornado, flood, fire etc. occurs, so many people grab the cell phones and home phones to "See if everyone is OK" that it overloads the Internet, Cell phone towers, and landline home phone systems.  Inability to "get through" creates even more distress and more efforts to use the phones, making the overload problem even worse as the first several days follow after a disaster.  Which also leads to:
(2) Public service officials, police, homeland security, etc, often SHUT DOWN parts of the telephone (cell AND home) systems to "prioritize" their own access to communications so they can better direct their own relief efforts.
(3) Electrical power is often lost at mountaintops and cell towers and telephone switching stations, reducing the number of calls that can be completed.
We will review ways to deal with each of these problems, using common sense and readily available equipment, without undue expense, using commonly available but rarely used resources:
-CB radios:  Communications for several miles from home or vehicle
-FRS and GMRS radios:  Local communications with walkie talkies and mobiles in vehicles
-Ham Radio for both local and long distance communications." - Jim Devenport

The Money Management Class " A seminar covering the money issues most people face (or will face).Often, in seminars like this, participants come away feeling as if they’ve learned something, but they’re not sure what to do with their new-found knowledge, and they don’t know how to figure out what applies to their own lives.
This seminar helps demystify financial issues, explains some basic concepts about how money works, and helps people understand their own relationship to money. We will discuss some of the more common issues facing people: cash reserves, taxes, retirement, college funding, estate planning, and insurance.
With the information presented in class, participants should be able to get a new perspective on their financial lives, and will be able to ask themselves (or a professional) much more productive questions."
